Poppy

Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep and death. Sleep because of the opium extracted from them; and death because of their commonly blood-red color. Poppies are used as emblems on tombstones to symbolize eternal sleep. This aspect was used fictionally in the Wizard of Oz to create a magical poppy field that was dangerous to those who passed through them because they make them fall asleep for ever. In the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia artificial poppies are worn to commemorate those who died in war. In the United States this is in conjuction with "Veterans Day" and are usually worn from the beginning of Novemeber to Veterans Day.
